Beginner Running – Learning to Run Again

I have signed up for my first 5k!!! How’s that? Well, I’ll tell you a story…..
Being married for a year + a half to Jeff, I’ve started to acquire some, ahem…..”love pounds” as they like to call it. I don’t know who “they” are but “they” like to say “love pounds” a lot in women’s magazines. I like to call it, “Lub Chub” because to me it sounds better. Or cuter. I love this photo, there’s a certain je ne sais quoi about it:
Isn’t that what being newly married is all about? No? Oh.
Anyway, it’s like I woke up one morning + saw this in the mirror:
Oh gurrrrrrl!!!! And you know when you only want to wear leggings or jeggings or pretty much anything with elastic in it – it’s time to rein it in!!!!!!
I wanted to give a shout out to a fellow blogger who inspired me (Airplanes + Treadmills)!!! She is also an American newly married to a Canuck (hi Janelle!)!!! Janelle’s post on her 4 week half marathon plan that she created for herself had me in awe!!!! Check it out here!
I was like, “DAYUM!!!!!”! Such an ambitious plan! I used to run, pump some mean iron + felt pretty strong. That’s me on the honeymoon in Hawaii. POWER!!!!!! I used to love the feeling of running + it was the only form of cardio (I tried spin, elliptical, jazzercise, you name it) that my body was really in tune to. I’d like to feel like that again! So, I signed up for the 2013 St. Patrick’s Day 5k!!!

I am a very goal oriented person + I knew this would be a kick in mah fanny to get in gear. So I found a schedule on About.com for 5K Training: Train to Run Your First 5K.
Seems realistic, right? Very doable!
AND I got a tip from my sister-in-law Deb about THE MOST AWESOME, SUPER RADICAL app: 5k Runner: 0 to 5k Run Training.
DOWNLOAD IT!!!! IT IS THE BOMB!!!! It is amazing because IT TELLS YOU WHAT TO DO. Me loves that. Me know not what doing. I don’t want to have to look at my watch or count my heart beats or think. I just want to feeeeel like this:
Another great feature to this app is that you can play your music + when it alerts you to start walking or running, the voice activation will override your music + tell you what’s next.
I also have the Nike Plus app because it tracks my mileage, my route + progress. I turn these two apps on at the same time. Tech savvyyyyyy!!!!!
Wish me luck, I just started + I already feel more like myself again already!!! RAAAAAAR!!!!
Hey Shelli! Great post, thanks for sharing my blog!! I am so excited for your first 5k and I cannot wait to read about your running journey:)
Happy Running,
Janelle
Thanks for reminding how much running rules with your rad blog! I am DETERMINED to get back into fighting form! Wooooo!!!!!!
Wow sister, I’m SO proud of you👍👏! Good job signing up for the 5K to keep yourself accountable! I’m only sad that I can’t be at the finish line cheering you on😔 but I’ll be with you in spirit!🎉 Love and miss you!💖
Thanks Ash! I wish you guys could be there too! Miss you!!!!!!!!
Yeah…you bailed on the Chinatown 5k we were gonna run in LA 2 years ago…I still get emails from them. But no hard feelings right? 🙂 (Love you lots)
PS. I love that you have an 8 week training plan. When I trained for the LA marathon, the coaches were like…ready? Timed 3 mile run…GO. And I was like WTF?
Why did I bail on you for the Chinatown run….oh yeah! Cuz I didn’t train + was working 16 hours a day! I know that’s no excuse for you cuz you’re crazy like a fox!!!! I’m taking it slow – I’m old + don’t want to strain myself!!!
Go Girl…Good On U,…yah, wish mumsie, ash & i could
be there 2 support U, good luck on ur training as well !!!!!
great talk’in at U this evening, keep the faith, luv Dad’s
I’ll make us all Team T-shirts + you guys can wear them on the day of the race! Haha Team Nishino!
You go girl!!
Yahooo!!!!
Good luck! 🙂
Thanks! I can use all the positive reinforcement I can get!!!
GOOD LUCK! I’m excited for you! Sometimes I think I might start running, but then I think…I’ll just leave that to the runners. I’m conflicted! It would be cool to be able to say I ran a 5K, and so nothing I’ve ever done before. Break out of the comfort zone, right? Right? It’s not all about Zumba after all. You may have inspired me (she said non-committally)… 🙂 I’ll keep you posted. XO
I’m telling you – I NEVER used to be a runner either!!!! It wasn’t until I read Chris McDougall’s “Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen”. Read it! A 5k is actually on 3 miles!!! You can do it!!! For real!!! Keep me posted!
My Shel,
I am so proud of you! Keep up the good job! You are amazing girl. I wish I am going to be there to give you the cold drink when you come to the finish line.
Love you very much and miss you,
Mommy,
You’re the best #1 mom in the world!!!!
