Pregnancy – Maternity Wear for Cheapskates

I have a really difficult time paying lots of money for something that I’m only going to be using for a couple of months.
Just add the words “Pregnancy”, “Maternity”, “Baby” or “Wedding” to a product + you’ll be spending up the wazoo. It’s a marketing sham! Don’t get suckered in! Think outside the box! Here are some of my tips for saving some cold hard cash on maternity wear.
Note: you may have a different fashion sense or lifestyle than me, so please take this all with a grain of salt! I really wanted to dress like Princess Di when she was pregnant, but alas I had to let go of that dream. Isn’t she divine?
I’m telling y’all. You do not need to go to Pea in the Pod or Motherhood. Go to the thrift store + look in the size sections that are one or two sizes larger than you usually wear. Think blousy, tunic + A-line! Do NOT go into the maternity section of the thrift store cuz it sucks + is always super sad town. EXCEPTION: unless you need office wear like maternity black slacks + other boring things.
2) DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THOSE “MATERNITY TOPS” WITH THE RUCHING
I don’t understand these tops. In my opinion, if you have a top with stretch in it, you can still wear it during pregnancy. And if you’re afraid of the bump poking out, just wear a coordinating longer cami underneath (long camis are your best friend during pregnancy)! Done!
I found lots of non maternity tops that work at good ol’ Forever 21! They’re cute, swingy + have major sassafras! And you can’t beat the prices!
4) WHAT?! THESE STORES CARRY MATERNITY? Click on links for company maternity pages!
Old Navy has maternity. Their prices are good, but their maternity jeans + most everything is pretty bland + the fabrics + fits are horrible. BUT the best maternity buys at Old Navy are their jackets. I bought a synthetic fiber fill puffy jacket with a hood that hits my knees. For $70. Most maternity puffy coats are $160 to $200 + up.
Oh hell no! I agree George, I agree. I wear the hell out of my puffy coat up here in chilly Canada, so I’m definitely getting my money’s worth. I basically look like a massive, hulking, walking sleeping bag when I wear it. People are afraid when I’m coming towards them on the streets. Like a big, pregnant thug.
H + M has maternity. H + M is the place to go for their skinny jeans + fashion pants. Great prices!
Topshop has maternity. I lurve me some Topshop.
Super fashion forward + cheap! So if you’re looking for something to wear on your date or to a party this is my recommendation!
5) DON’T BUY MATERNITY TIGHTS – I just bought one pair of black maternity leggings + put them to double duty. I wear them under a long top, or under dresses with knee high boots. Obvi you can ‘t wear them with high heels unless you’re going for that ’80s look, which I really don’t advise. But anyway, it’s only for a couple of months, so suck it up + just wear them with boots – no one will be the wiser!
Hmmmm, that’s all I can think of at the moment because my brain is el fried-o. More for later! Ta-taaaa!!!!
Hey, Good On U,…i agree with George!!!!!
hope all is well, keep the faith, Take Care!!!
best to Jeff and Baby Fayle,…Luv U, Dad’s
George is all knowing! Trying to save that moolah! Love you dad!
I didn’t buy a single “maternity” thing. I bought stuff that I would wear in a size up from my normal – things that could be worn easily after Peanut’s arrival. My mother is a seamstress and made two pairs of maternity pants for me (I’m so big they no longer fit), and my girlfriend gifted me a gently-used pair of maternity jeans that I wear up to this day.
Woohoo! A girl after my own heart! Nice job! I love it!
yes i agree with F21, they are cheap and i bought mostly tunics that i could wear after as well. H&M has maternity wear at the PC location but it’s not a huge selection.
Yeah I went out to Pacific Center just to buy some jeans at H + M!
