One Can Never Have Enough Books

Between the two of us – Jeff + I have a ridiculous amount of books. Luckily Jeff is handy enough to build us a bookshelf to wrangle the majority of them!
Too bad I didn’t have a “before” picture of the sad entryway wall where we put our bookshelf. Just imagine if you will, a sumptuous wall of glamorous laminate wood paneling with the house circuit panel glaring at you, unashamed. It was an eyesore to say the least!
We found some Ikea Billy bookcases for cheap on Craigslist from a gal that was downsizing to a smaller place. Bookcases ain’t cheap, y’all!!! It’s a racket, this bookcase business!!!! Highway robbery!!! Jeff measured the wall + looked at the specs for the Billy bookcases on Ikea’s website + heyoooooooo – they fit like a dream!!!!
He also hammered them into the wall for stability which is awesome, because if it were me, I wouldn’t have thought to do that + one day he would have found me on the ground buried under an avalanche of books. He also cut a hole with his Dremel Multi Max so we could have access to the circuit panel, which we cover up with a picture. Sneaky sneaky!!!
It took a while to get the bookcase organized + not looking sloppy + looking like the Nutty Professor’s bookcase. Megumi was SO OVER IT.
Our little tchotchkes are filled in here + there.
Sadly to say, there are more books to come! I still have some in storage + Jeff has probably half a dozen boxes to come!!! Anyone I know who’s practical says, “How could you possibly need that many books?!”. We love it! And we do leaf through them + enjoy them! Ask me again when the time comes to move + I shall most likely denounce my love for all these books + want to throw them all in a deep pit! But for now, we are thoroughly enjoying our little library!
I definitely agree! I think I have more books than you and I still feel that way, so keep collecting! 🙂 And I really like that picture you’re covering the panel with – is there a story behind it? It looks like the brass rubbings my mom did in Europe in the 70s!
I know! You have SO MANY BOOKS!!! I got the picture at a thrift store – of course! You are the best, because I just did some research + found out about our couple! The lady is Margery Paris d. 1427, Cambridgeshire – Margery was the wife of Henry Paris. The knight is Henry Paris d. 1427, Cambridgeshire – the husband of Margery, in the full plate armor of the Lancastrian period. He stands on a lion and wears pauldrons (shoulder pieces) made of laminated plates.
Very cool!
I love the way Jeff always poses in a super hero kind of way. I also love your little wooden monkey and your mushroom vase thingy. Great job! You guys are really making this place yours.
Thanks!!! We are loving our cozy home! Jeff does fancy himself as superhero. I just asked him if he could have any super power what would it be. He replied, “To speak every language.”. Interesting….
Wow, what a great super power!
Yeah I never would have thought of that one! I would have been all typical + said, “Flying!”.
You’ve got a creative one there. 😉
Yes. We have an obscene amount of books, too. George and I just went through a bunch of them and sorted out what we were willing to get rid of/what we were absolutely keeping/what we could store but didn’t want to part with yet. Three big boxes that were donated to a library and two trunk-sized Rubbermaid containers in the basement later, I’ve still got overloaded bookcases in every room of the house. 🙂 I hear ya, sister!
I know! We are constantly editing + paring it down! It’s hard to resist a book when you see it at the thrift store for twenty five cents or a dollar + then you come home + realize the house is bursting at the seams with books!
Jeff built the excellent book case to store all books and nick nacks.
Megu is thinking that mommy is cleaning this place again!!!! Cute. I miss and love you , Jeff and Megu.
