Painting Tips

Interior house painting has commenced!  Finally!!!

Starting with our living room/entry way.  I’ll give you a brief tour.

Eeew.

Oh no.

Egads!!!!

OH HELLS TO THE NO!!!!  Orange ceiling, one olive wall, one peach wall + bad wood laminate walls – all topped off with delightful dark navy trim!!!!  Barf-o-rama!!!!!  I can’t even deal.

Better tarp this sucka up!!!

You know what is a royal pain-in-the-you-know-what????  The tiny grooves in the laminate that the paint roller doesn’t penetrate.  So each groove has to be HAND PAINTED in.  Sooooooo tedious.  I HATE tedious!!!!

Ask anyone.  I am the worst house painter ever.  I’m neither patient nor meticulous.

Oh, let’s not forget I’ve been working on the bedroom too.

OH GROSS!!!!  Olive ceilings + lemon yellow walls, begone!!!!

OKAY here are my handy painting tips!!!

#1  –  The “W” method really speeds up the process!!!

Paint roll a W shape + fill in the remainder of the shape!  Very efficient + quick!!!

#2  –  At the end of the day, wrap your paint roller in saran wrap + put in the freezer.

The next day, thaw the roller out for 15-20 minutes + voila!!!!  Good to go!!!

#3  –  Trim guards!!!!  I vow to never paint without one again!!!!  In the beginning of my endeavors I asked Jeff about using painter’s tape.  The response was, “Painter’s tape is for wussies!!!”.  Now I know why.  Stick a trim guard under your baseboards + paint away with confidence mis amigos!!!

#4  –  Go + purchase a Mastercraft Work Platform before you start painting!!!!  “DO WHAT??!!” you exclaim.

I’m telling you.  You won’t regret it!  The bench allows you to scoot along the length of the platform + paint as you go.  As opposed to a ladder which forces you to paint, move, paint, move, paint….you get the picture.  This bench is a lifesaver!!!!!

#5  –  Find a large rubber band, wrap it around your paint can + you’ll always have a neat place to wipe the excess paint off of your paint brush!!!!

This tip comes from the wonderful Martha Stewart.  Here are more of her painting tips here.  People may hate on her, but her publications have sparked countless useful ideas!!!!

Paintbrush combs.  Yesssss.  Awwwwwesoooome.   Get one.  At the end of your painting day, run your paintbrush under warm water + come the excess paint from your brush with the comb.

Makes for a real purty, sparkly clean brush to start your new day with!!!  Oh, the little joys!!!

That’s all for today, folks!!!  Keep close to your monitors for more painting escapades to come!!!

  5. My office is thinking about hiring a commercial painter, so I decided to look online for painting tips. I like your tip about painting with the “W” method, I didn’t know about how this method is beneficial in the painting process. Now if I see these painters use the “W” method, I’ll understand why they are painting in that manner.
